Self-efficacy Development: Realizing Potentials through Sports

Some people tend to be fatalistic by nature. They are often quite content to let destiny or fate take its course, and they simply follow where it goes. The majority of people, however, tend to view their future as something that they themselves are able to control through decisions that they make. There are, in fact, many aspects of a person’s life that they can have a say in and can control. Most of these tend to be physical decisions, but in the long run, these also help to affect a person’s character and values, and allow him to reach self-efficacy. By being able to have a say in certain things in his life, a person will be able to manage and affect long term goals and realize his life’s objectives.

Exercise and sports are one of the areas where a person possesses some measure of control over how they can physically look. Sports especially, are activities that people engage in because a person is interested in it first and foremost, rather than seeking to improve him or herself physically. Because it is the person’s interest in the sport that primarily motivates him to join it, determining how well he can perform and excel in that sport can produce greater self-efficacy.

Sorts play a very important role in a persons’ life, particularly because there are many different kinds of sports that a person can choose to participate in. From hard contact sports such as football, basketball, and soccer, to sports that balance both the body and the mind like taekwondo or judo, to even sorts that chose to hone thinking skills like in chess.

By participating more in sports of their choice, people become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses in the process. Sports allow them to either further increase their strengths, or seek to improve upon any flaws that they detect. A basketball player may perceive that while they may be good at assists or rebounds, they also need to improve on their shooting skills. A football player may find that while he has more than enough strength needed to play a quarterback, he needs to build up on his speed more. Becoming more aware of what they can or cannot do can aid a person in determining the next steps he would need to take to improve himself as a person.

The more sports one is able to take up, so much the better. Some sports can improve on certain skills but ignore others, and not just in the physical sense. Many sports help to build teamwork and critical thinking, and can even help people practice making split second decisions. The more practice one puts to the sport of their choice, the more they are able to improve upon these kinds of techniques. The earlier that one is able to participate in sports, the better they keep in mind the principles that the subsequently learn as well.

Perhaps the most important aspect of taking up sports in one’s youth is the fact that the skills and techniques that they learn during this can be put to use when they grow older, particularly in work and family. Some skills like critical thinking and learning to make good judgments are important in many careers, and better physical coordination often ensures better heath.

Also, values that are learned while playing sports can be even put to use when dealing with relationships with other people, as sports is one of the activities where one has to deal with other people and work together as a team to accomplish certain goals and objectives. Similarly, learning to work as a team in sports helps people t understand how to efficiently work together in other areas, including work and one’s personal life.
